Florida Driver License After Moving: The 30-Day Rule, 10-Day Tag Rule, and What to Bring
New to Florida? You have 30 days to get a Florida driver license and 10 days to register vehicles. Here's the right order, the documents to bring, and the known state fees.
On this page
Florida gives new residents short deadlines to switch licenses and vehicle registrations. The process is very doable if you know the order and bring the right documents the first time. This guide summarizes the official rules from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Rules and fees can change, so always confirm on flhsmv.gov/new-resident before you go.
The two deadlines
- 10 days to register your vehicles after you establish residency, start a job in Florida, or enroll a child in a Florida public school, whichever happens first.
- 30 days to get a Florida driver license after establishing residency.
Notice that enrolling a child in school starts the 10-day vehicle clock. Families often plan the tax collector visit for the same week as school enrollment.
Do it in this order
1. Buy Florida auto insurance
You need a policy from an agent licensed in Florida before you can title and register a vehicle. Florida requires at least $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL). Those are minimums; many drivers choose more coverage. Source: flhsmv.gov/insurance.
2. Get the VIN verified
Vehicles coming from another state need a VIN and odometer verification on form HSMV 82042. FLHSMV lists who can complete it, such as law enforcement officers, licensed dealers, or a Florida notary public.
3. Title and register at the county tax collector
Complete form HSMV 82040 and bring your out-of-state title. If a lender holds your title, contact the lienholder first; FLHSMV explains your options if they won't send it.
4. Get your Florida driver license
Bring identity documents and surrender your out-of-state license. You can't hold licenses from two states.
5. Cancel the old state's registration and insurance
Only after your Florida coverage and plates are active.
What to bring for a driver license (U.S. citizens)
Florida licenses are REAL ID compliant, so you'll need original documents. FLHSMV asks for:
- Proof of identity, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
- Proof of Social Security number, such as your Social Security card or a W-2
- Two proofs of Florida residential address, such as a lease, utility bill, or bank statement
- Name-change documents if your name differs from your birth certificate (marriage certificate, court order)
- Your out-of-state license to surrender
Non-citizens have different document lists. Use FLHSMV's What to Bring tool.
Tip: If your landlord holds the water account (common in some cities), your lease and electric bill can still serve as proofs of address. Check the accepted-documents list first.
Fees you can plan on
| Item | State fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Registration Fee | $225 per vehicle | Charged when you don't have a Florida plate, or a record of one, to transfer (Fla. Stat. 320.072) |
| Original license plate | $28 | FLHSMV fee table |
| Class E driver license (original) | $48 | Per driver |
| Local service fee | $6.25 | Most tax collector offices add this to license transactions |
| Title fee, registration (tag) fee, taxes | Varies | Depends on vehicle type, weight, and situation |
Example for two cars and two drivers (known fees only): 2 × $225 + 2 × $28 + 2 × $48 + 2 × $6.25 = $614.50, before title fees, weight-based registration fees, and any taxes. Full fee table: flhsmv.gov/fees.
Where to go in South Florida
Driver license services in South Florida have been moving from state-run offices to county tax collectors:
- Miami-Dade: the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector issues driver licenses and IDs at offices it has taken over; FLHSMV still manages appointments at offices not yet transitioned. mdctaxcollector.gov
- Broward: the Broward County Tax Collector handles titles and tags and announced it would take over local driver license services in 2026. browardtax.org
- Palm Beach: the Constitutional Tax Collector handles licenses, titles, and tags; in-person license service is by reservation. pbctax.gov
Elsewhere in Florida, check your county tax collector and flhsmv.gov/locations.

- Book appointments as soon as you have an address.
- Bring originals, not copies.
- Bring both proofs of address for every driver.
- Bring your insurance card and title for each vehicle.
- If you have a loan, contact the lienholder before your appointment.
Other things to update
- Voter registration at the Florida Division of Elections (dos.fl.gov/elections)
- Your insurance policies with your new address and plates
- If you bought a home: the homestead exemption application (DR-501) with your county property appraiser, due March 1 (Florida Department of Revenue, PT-113)
Budget for it
Between registration fees, plates, licenses, and new insurance, the switch adds up. Put these costs into your move budget ahead of time. If you're paid every two weeks, assign them to a specific paycheck so they don't collide with deposits and first month's rent; our guide to budgeting biweekly paychecks shows how.

- Florida insurance card for each vehicle
- Completed HSMV 82042 VIN verification, if needed
- Completed HSMV 82040 and your out-of-state title
- Proof of identity and Social Security number for each driver
- Two proofs of Florida address for each driver

- Out-of-state licenses to surrender
- A payment method for fees
If you're short on time
The 10-day registration window is the tightest deadline, and it can be triggered by starting a job or enrolling a child in school, not just by signing a lease. If you know you'll be busy the first week, buy the Florida insurance policy and arrange the VIN verification before you arrive, then book the tax collector appointment as soon as you have an address. Getting those two steps done early is usually what makes the rest go smoothly.
